State Car Insurance

State Car Insurance

As a business division of the market leading insurance provider – IAG, State provides insurance policies to more than 400,000 New Zealanders. While State offers a number of insurance products, one of its main offerings is car insurance.

State claims to put customers at the centre of everything it does, protecting the things that are important to New Zealanders. The insurance provider also supports its wider community, ensuring that its employees spend one day a year volunteering for a local community group.

State is conscious of the environment, and therefore sees it as its responsibility to operate sustainably. With the long-term aim to become carbon neutral, State has launched a number of initiatives to reduce CO2 emissions within the company and the communities it’s a part of.

What’s on offer from State?

State splits its products into the three general types of car insurance:

Comprehensive car insurance

State’s comprehensive car insurance policy covers you for accidental loss or damage to your car, and damage to another person’s car or property, of up to $20 million. As well as this, you will be covered for damage done to your car by uninsured drivers, towing and transport expenses, and up to $300 towards replacing locks and keys. With this policy, you can also receive an online discount of $50.

Third Party, fire and theft car insurance

As a mid-range car insurance policy, this type protects you against the cost of slightly less than that of comprehensive car insurance. You will be covered for the cost of damage done to your vehicle and someone else’s vehicle, of up to $20 million. However, this policy will only cover you up to $3000, in the case your car is damaged by an uninsured driver. While you will be covered for towing expenses and transport excesses, the cost of replacing keys and locks is not included in the policy.  You can save $25 if you purchase this policy online.

Third Party Car Insurance

State’s Third Party Car Insurance essentially protects you against the cost of damage done to someone else’s vehicle or property. The policy can cover up to $20 million for the damage or injury you cause. Although it doesn’t offer cover if you accidentally damage your own car, if an uninsured driver damages your car, you will be covered for up to $3000 of the repair costs. You’re also eligible for towing expenses cover and an online discount of $10.

State provides add-ons for all three of its policies. For an extra $30 a year, you can receive roadside rescue with any personal State car insurance policy. State Roadside Rescue includes two free call outs a year, and this isn’t limited to just one driver. If the car is covered by State, any individual driving the car can be assisted by State’s Roadside Rescue team, who are on call 24/7. Requesting for help can be done with the press of a button, through the State App. One of State’s technicians will locate you through your phone’s location services and will then text you to let you know how far away they are.

At an extra cost, you can also purchase windscreen glass cover and hire car add-ons. State’s windscreen glass cover protects you against the cost of damage done to your car’s windscreen, sun roof and driving lights, and you won’t need to pay an excess fee. If your car has been stolen or is being repaired, the hire car add on will provide you with a free hire car for up to two weeks.

For every $25 you spend on State premiums, you can receive one Fly Buys point.

State car insurance discounts

If you take out car insurance with State, you may be eligible for several discounts. All of State’s car insurance policies offer a multi-policy discount, where if you also purchase State content insurance, you may be eligible for a 10% multi policy discount.

State rewards loyal customers with its “year of insurance discount”. You may be eligible for this discount if you have had your car insurance policy with State for more than one year.

State also offers an immobiliser discount, which you may qualify for if you have an approved immobiliser in your car.

State Account Management

State has its very own free app, designed for the purpose of account and policy management. On the State app, you can make a claim, pay your renewal and view policy details, as well as keep track of accident information in your Crash Notes. While the State app is the most efficient way to manage your policies with State, there is also the option to call, email or use the webchat tool on State’s website.

When it comes to payment, State offers a range of options. State allows you to pay annually by cheque, credit card or bill payment, or monthly or fortnightly, through direct debit from your bank account or credit card. Your premium payments can be made online, through the app, through a phone call, or in person at a New Zealand post. If you collect Fly Buys points, make sure you give State your Fly Buys numbers, so you can collect points while paying your premiums.

Is State right for me?

There is no sure-fire way of saying whether State is right for you. However, some of the notable benefits to State include its offering of discounts and Fly Buy Points with its policies, along with its range of options when it comes to payments, add-ons and account management features.

There may be a stand-out car insurance feature that is important to you and in this case, you should choose a car insurance provider that offers this. This also applies if there are multiple factors that are important to you. Canstar surveyed thousands of New Zealanders and asked them to rate their car insurance provider on a range of factors, such as value for money, communication and claims lodgement. Canstar’s result table may act as guidance to help you find a suitable car insurance provider for you. Click below to see how State performed.
