Do credit card rewards points expire?

Co-author: TJ Ryan

Are you worried your credit card rewards points will expire before you can use them?

If you want to save up your credit card rewards points over a long time period and cash them in on a big ticket item, such as international flights, you’ll need to choose a rewards program where points don’t expire before you can use them. It would be heartbreaking to accrue hundreds of thousands of points only to see them disappear.

One of the questions you should consider when comparing credit card rewards is whether the rewards points expire.

Do credit card rewards points expire?

Points do not expire for most of the credit cards rewards programs on the Canstar database. However,  some cards may have a points cap, meaning you that can only earn up to a certain number of points.

Points do expire for some rewards programs, meaning they disappear from your account and cannot be used. Some rewards programs have both a cap and an expiry date on their points. So it’s definitely worth shopping around and doing your research before choosing a rewards program.

Will my frequent flyer rewards points expire?

Each frequent flyer points program will have its own expiry policy, which is usually available on their website.

Air New Zealand’s Airpoints Dollars remain valid for four years from the date they were accrued. Following four years from accrual, the Airpoints Dollars will expire and be removed from your Account on the anniversary of the day you joined the program.

Do rewards points expire when I close my account?

With most credit card providers, rewards point expire when you close your account and that credit card is cancelled. With some credit card providers, you have a certain amount of time in which you can still redeem your rewards points after closing a credit card account (e.g. 90 days after cancelling the card).

With other credit card rewards programs such as Air New Zealand Airpoints or Fly Buys points, the rewards program is actually a separate account to your credit card, so when you cancel a credit card, your rewards points do not expire. You can still redeem your rewards points and continue to earn more points if you have the loyalty card for that program or if you hold a different credit card that also earns points in that rewards program.
