What does Southern Cross domestic travel insurance cover?
Southern Cross’ Visiting New Zealand travel insurance policy will cover you for expenses relating to medical and evacuation, personal accidents, legal liability, rental vehicle excess, loss of cash or travel documents, unexpected journey changes and more.

What does Southern Cross international travel insurance cover?
Southern Cross’s TravelCare international travel insurance policy will cover you for medical and hospital bills, emergency dental treatment, loss of income, personal accidents, legal liability, rental vehicle excess, loss of cash or travel documents, unexpected journey changes and more.

Yes, Southern Cross’ TravelCare international travel insurance policy has unlimited cover for overseas medical and hospital expenses. As always, various conditions and exclusions will apply. For more information, read Southern Cross’ Product Disclosure Statement.
Yes, Southern Cross will cover you up to a certain amount for replacing or reimbursing luggage and personal effects that are lost, stolen or damaged while travelling.
Under Southern Cross’ domestic travel insurance policy, you are not covered for loss of luggage – any loss or damage to any personal items or effects is listed under the General Exclusions of the policy. You are, however, covered for the loss of cash and essential travel documents, up to $1,000; an excess of $100 applies.
Under Southern Cross’ international travel insurance policy, you can be compensated for up to $25,000 per journey for individuals or $50,000 for couples – however an excess does apply. Yes, Southern Cross travel insurance will cover up to a certain amount for lost deposits and cancellation fees for pre-paid travel arrangements due to unforeseen circumstances outside the traveller’s control on a policy. Read the Product Disclosure Statement for more information.
You can purchase a Southern Cross travel insurance policy by first comparing your options with Canstar and then generating a quote online. All you need are your departure dates, destination(s) and the ages of those being covered. You can also choose between a single trip or an annual multi-trip policy – the latter is more expensive but usually better value if you’re doing a lot of international travelling.

You can lodge a claim with Southern Cross online, with assistance available by calling 0800 800 571 Monday to Friday – they also have 24/7 emergency hotline numbers for NZ or international callers. To make a claim, you’ll need several standard things:
- The details of the main policy holder, including the policy number
- Your items, events or expenses you wish to claim for
- All supporting documentation, which Southern Cross will specify via email; this could include receipts, valuations, police reports, copies of travel documents etc.
Following submission, it’s just a matter of waiting to see if your claim will be paid out – Southern Cross will keep you updated with regards to the turnaround time.
