AA Health Insurance: NZ’s Favourite Health Insurance Provider 2023

Congratulations to AA Health Insurance for achieving a hat-trick and winning Canstar’s Most Satisfied Customers | Health Insurance Award for the third year in a row.

Kiwi health insurance consumers have spoken. And, for the third year in a row, they’ve rated AA Health Insurance the best health insurer for delivering all-round customer satisfaction.

Each year, as part of Canstar’s mission to help consumers make the right financial decisions, we talk to 1000s of everyday New Zealanders with health insurance policies and ask them to rate their health insurance providers.

For this year’s Most Satisfied Customers | Health Insurance Award, we spoke to 1288 Kiwis and asked them rate their providers’ performance across the following categories:

  • Overall Satisfaction
  • Communication
  • Comprehensiveness of Cover

  • Cost
  • Customer Service
  • Value for Money

And the results are clear: AA Health Insurance tops our award table with yet another set of impeccable ratings from its many contented customers.

AA Health Insurance achieves a top 5-Star rating in five out of six categories, earning it more 5-Star ratings than the other six health insurance providers in our awards ratings combined.

What does AA Health Insurance Offer

AA Health Insurance is clearly the nation’s choice when it comes to customer service and value for money, but what health insurance products does it offer?

AA Health Insurance offers three plans, each providing different levels of cover:

  • Everyday Plan
  • Private Hospital Plan
  • Private Hospital & Specialist Plan

It’s worth nothing that on all plans, a 5% discount is available when you provide a valid AA Membership number for you or someone named on your policy.

Everyday Plan

The most affordable option, Everyday health insurance cover includes:

  • Dental
  • GP consultations
  • Physiotherapy
  • Glasses and contact lenses

Under the Everyday policy, AA will reimburse you 60% of the cost of the above expenses up to $900 (benefit limits apply).

You can take out Everyday Cover by itself, or in combination with Private Hospital, or Private Hospital and Specialist, to cover both the everyday medical expenses and the bigger stuff too.

Private Hospital Plan

This covers diagnostics, surgeries and treatment in private hospitals, including:

  • Cancer treatments: $300,000 for cancer surgery; $200,000 for cancer treatment at hospital, plus up to $10,000 for cancer treatment at home
  • Hospital diagnostics and specialist consultations, up to $300,000 p.a.
  • Non-surgical hospitalisation, up to $200,000 p.a.
  • Parent accommodation
  • Post-hospital home nursing
  • Physiotherapy and therapeutic care
  • Pre-existing cover for newborns
  • Specialist skin lesion surgery
  • Ambulance transfer
  • Choice of excess options

There is also the option to add non-PHARMAC Plus, which subsidises the cost of non-PHARMAC-funded medication.

Private Hospital & Specialist Plan

Covers everything in Private Hospital cover, plus:

  • Specialist consultations
  • Cover for many pre-existing conditions after three years
  • CT, MRI and PET scans
  • Diagnostic investigations
  • Follow-up investigation for cancer
  • GP minor surgery
  • Intravitreal eye injections
  • Obstetrics (for risk factors)

Also comes with the option to add non-PHARMAC plus, which subsidises the cost of non-PHARMAC-funded medication.
