SPCA Pet Insurance

Pets offer an endless amount of love and companionship. But, just like human health, the wellbeing of your pets can become complicated and expensive when things go wrong. To ensure you and your furry friends are better prepared for the unexpected, Canstar compares pet insurance policies and discovers how SPCA Pet Insurance stacks up against the competition.

What does SPCA Pet Insurance offer?

SPCA Pet Insurance offers separate insurance plans for dogs and cats*, with three levels of cover. These policies are:

  • Everyday Cover
  • The Works Cover
  • Big Stuff Cover

*Cat and dog policies cover specific illnesses and situations, however, the specified coverage in the following policies apply to both cats and dogs.

What’s covered by SPCA’s Everyday Cover?

Everyday cover is ideal for the “occasional bump of an otherwise well-behaved pet”. This policy includes:

  • 70% of eligible vet bills covered
  • $11,000 annual limit
  • No excess
  • $300 per year for consultations
  • Fortnightly, monthly or annual premiums
  • Apply from 8 weeks of age

What’s covered by SPCA’s The Works Cover?

The Works Cover is ideal for “giving your pet the best available care over and over again”. This policy includes:

  • 80% of eligible vet bills covered
  • $20,000 annual limit
  • No excess
  • $500 per year for consultations
  • Fortnightly, monthly or annual premiums
  • Apply from 8 weeks to 9 years of age

What’s covered by SPCA’s Big Stuff Cover?

Big Stuff Cover is ideal for “large and shocking vet bills when your pet needs surgery or other expensive procedures”. This policy includes:

  • 90% of eligible vet bills covered
  • $25,000 annual limit
  • Unlimited consultations up to the specified benefit limit
  • Fortnightly, monthly or annual premiums
  • Apply from 8 weeks of age
  • No sub-limit on cruciate ligament conditions
  • No sub-limit for intervertebral disc disease

It’s important to note that unlike SPCA’s other pet insurance policies, Big Stuff Cover has a $1000 excess.

What’s not covered by SPCA Pet Insurance?

SPCA Pet Insurance has some exclusions around animals of a certain age, as well as some animals with pre-existing conditions. If your pet has existing conditions that require ongoing treatment or medication when taking out a new policy, they may be excluded from cover.

Some medical procedures including desexing, neutering and spaying are not covered by SPCA Pet Insurance. Dental costs are also not covered and cannot be added to any pet insurance policy.

Why choose SPCA Pet Insurance?

When you purchase a SPCA Pet Insurance policy, you’re helping the SPCA support vulnerable animals across New Zealand.

And, as an extra perk, you’ll receive a multi-policy discount of 10% for each additional policy you add.
