Pets offer an endless amount of love and companionship. But, just like human health, the wellbeing of your pets can become complicated and expensive when things go wrong. To ensure you and your furry friends are better prepared for the unexpected, Canstar compares pet insurance policies and discovers how AA Pet Insurance stacks up against the competition.

  • Essentials: Maximum cover of $7000, which includes injury, illness, specialist treatment, patella conditions, cruciate ligament conditions, alternative therapy, funeral costs, emergency boarding fees for owner hospitalisation, lost pet and holiday cancellation. What’s covered by AA Pet Insurance for kittens and puppies?

Starter Cover for Puppies and Kittens is designed to help with unexpected vet bills, accidental injuries and illnesses while you’re settling your pet into its new home. It includes:

  • Six weeks free cover, with a $100 excess per event. After this period, you must choose one of the cat/dog policies listed above
  • Valid for six weeks from the time you activate your cover
  • If any accidental injuries happen after you activate, you’ll be covered straight away. You are covered for illness after the first week
  • All claims to a max $1500

What’s not covered by AA Pet Insurance?

AA Pet Insurance has some exclusions around animals of a certain age, as well as some animals with pre-existing conditions. Policies do not cover damage to property, people or other animals caused by your pet, or for treatment as a result of negligent owner behaviour.

Note that some pre-existing conditions may be covered after 18 months. Unlike most pet insurers in New Zealand, AA can cover some pre-existing conditions, depending on whether they are considered a temporary or chronic condition. If your pet has a temporary condition that occurred or existed before you took out the policy (or arises during the relevant waiting period) but has been symptom-free for 18 months, you can apply for your pet to be covered for that condition under the policy.

Why choose AA Pet Insurance?

AA Pet Insurance leverages on an established brand, and its reputation for quick and simple claims. If your pet gets sick or has an accidental injury, AA will reimburse up to 80% of your eligible vet costs up to your benefit limit.

Some perks of buying AA pet insurance include:

  • AA Members can receive a 5% discount on each policy
  • If you are not an AA Member, you can still get a 5% multi-pet discount if you cover more than one pet with AA
  • You can insure pets from age eight weeks, up to nine years. Once insured, the pet is covered for its lifetime as long as there’s no break in cover
  • Optional Paw Care add-on, which allows you to claim for regular vet procedures, such as vaccinations, microchipping, registration costs, flea control, regular blood tests, etc
