AA Pet Insurance

Pets offer an endless amount of love and companionship. But, just like human health, the wellbeing of your pets can become complicated and expensive when things go wrong. To ensure you and your furry friends are better prepared for the unexpected, Canstar compares pet insurance policies and discovers how AA Pet Insurance stacks up against the competition.

What does AA Pet Insurance offer?

AA Pet Insurance offers two plans: Dog insurance and cat insurance. These plans are customisable, allowing you to cater it to your needs.

  • An annual limit of $5000, $10,000 or $15,000. This is the highest amount AA will pay out in a year.
  • Choose from $0, $100, $250, or $500 excess options. The higher the excess, the lower your premium will be.
  • Option to add Paw Care, which covers routine costs like check-ups and vaccinations.

What’s covered by AA Pet Insurance for dogs?

AA Dog Insurance includes cover for injuries such as:

  • Swallowed objects
  • Blistered paws from walking on hot surfaces
  • Skin conditions
  • Poisoning – don’t forget that common things like choccies can be harmful!
  • Cruciate ligament injury
  • Car accidents

It also covers times when your dog gets sick and needs comprehensive tests or surgery. If this happens, AA can help you with costs for hospitalisation, surgery, lab and diagnostic tests, and even cancer treatment.

Do note that certain events, such as dental illness or consultation fees have sub-limits. This means that irrespective of your chosen annual limit, AA will only cover certain events up to a specified sub-limit.

What’s covered by AA Pet Insurance for cats?

AA Cat Insurance includes cover for injuries such as:

  • Swallowed objects
  • Poisoning – don’t forget that common things like raw fish can be harmful!
  • Allergic reactions to insect bites
  • Car accidents
  • Lacerations, be it from cat fights or stepping on a piece of glass
  • Injuries from being stuck in a fence

It also covers times when your cat gets sick and needs comprehensive tests or surgery.

What’s not covered by AA Pet Insurance?

AA Pet Insurance has some exclusions around animals of a certain age, as well as some animals with pre-existing conditions. Policies do not cover damage to property, people or other animals caused by your pet, or for treatment as a result of negligent owner behaviour.

Note that some pre-existing conditions may be covered after 18 months. Unlike most pet insurers in New Zealand, AA can cover some pre-existing conditions, depending on whether they are considered a temporary or chronic condition. If your pet has a temporary condition that occurred or existed before you took out the policy (or arises during the relevant waiting period) but has been symptom-free for 18 months, you can apply for your pet to be covered for that condition under the policy.

Why choose AA Pet Insurance?

AA Pet Insurance leverages on an established brand, and its reputation for quick and simple claims. If your pet gets sick or has an accidental injury, AA will reimburse up to 80% of your eligible vet costs up to your benefit limit.

Some perks of buying AA pet insurance include:

  • AA Members can receive a 5% discount on each policy
  • If you are not an AA Member, you can still get a 5% multi-pet discount if you cover more than one pet with AA
