ASB: Canstar’s Merchant Services Award Winner 2023

Congratulations to ASB, the winner of Canstar’s Most Satisfied Customers | Small Business Merchant Services Award 2023.

In today’s increasingly cashless society, small businesses are totally reliant on their digital merchant services. Should their sales terminals go down, so too does business, and profits.

This is why it’s essential for banks to deliver their small business customers totally reliable merchant services that deliver 100% satisfaction.

But which bank offers the best merchant service products to its customers? As part of our mission to inform business consumers of the best NZ has to offer, each year Canstar talks to hundreds of Kiwi small business owners to rate their satisfaction with their banking providers.

For this year’s Most Satisfied Customers Award, we canvassed the opinions of 170 NZ small business owners who rely on their merchant service facilities, across a range of categories, to measure and track their satisfaction.

To decide which merchant service provider offers the best level of customer satisfaction, each was rated across the following categories:

  • Overall Satisfaction
  • Communication
  • Customer Service
  • Device Functionality

  • Fees & Charges
  • Online Reporting
  • Reliability
  • Speed of Service/Transaction

ASB: Canstar’s Merchant Services Award Winner 2023

This year’s win marks the second time ASB has taken home Canstar’s top accolade in just the past four years. Across all our award categories it earns great praise from its small business customers, taking home nearly a clean sweep of 5-Star ratings: it scores just one 3-Star rating, for Fees & Charges.

While, of course, the cost of doing business is always relevant, our research shows that when it comes to merchant services, reliability is the most important factor for small business owners: it tops our list of the biggest drivers of satisfaction, cited by close to a third of those in our survey:

Drivers of satisfaction %
Reliability 30%
Communication 22%
Customer Service 19%
Online Reporting 11%
Speed of Transaction 7%
Fees & Charges 6%
Device Functionality 6%

What does ASB offer small businesses?

ASB offers a range of payment systems, from mobile terminals to those that integrate with point of sale (POS) systems, and charges a maximum 0.70% merchant service fee for Visa and Mastercard debit contactless transactions.

In addition to contactless, chip and swipe payments methods, the bank also offers ASB Smart Debit, to collect payments from regular customers, seven-day settlement and a range of other merchant services, if you already have your own device for accepting payments.

So if you’re a small business that requires 100% dependable merchant services and are looking for a bank that delivers not only a reliable system, but also great customer service and communication, why not check out what the ASB has to offer?
