Kogan was founded by entrepreneur Ruslan Kogan 25 years ago in Australia as an online own-brand electrical goods retailer. Since then it's grown into a huge company, selling a wide range of products on its NZ and OZ websites.
Here in Aotearoa, it owns online retailer MightyApe.co.nz. However, despite its size, the Kogan Mobile brand is still a small player in the market. But it's deserving of greater attention, because if you're after a cheap, no-frills phone plan, Kogan Mobile's pre-paid deals are some of the cheapest around.
What phone plans does Kogan Mobile offer?
Kogan keeps it simple with just four pre-paid phone plans. The plans are available in 31-periods, or you can pay for 365 upfront for a discount, as shown. Across both periods, data, call and text allowances renew every 31 days:
31-day | 365-day plans
- $15 Plan: 1.5GB data & unlimited calls & texts to NZ/OZ | $160 per year (= $13.59 per 31 days)
- $25 Plan: 4GB data & unlimited calls & texts to NZ/OZ | $250 per year (= $21.23 per 31 days)
- $35 Plan: 15GB data & unlimited calls & texts to NZ/OZ | $330 per year (= $28.03 per 31 days)
- $55 Plan: 32GB data & unlimited calls & texts to NZ/OZ | $490 per year (= $41.62 per 31 days)
As you can see there are considerable savings to be had if you sign up for a year-long deal. However, there are a couple of things to consider before signing up to Kogan's 365-day plans:
- You'll need to pay the entire cost upfront
- If you cancel your 365-day plan at any time, you'll forfeit your unused credit
Note: before you can sign up for Kogan Mobile, you have to order a Kogan sim card for $5.
Are Kogan's pre-paid plans value for money?
Compared to other prepaid deals in the market, all of Kogan's mobile plans stand out as being excellent value for money.
Notably, it's the only prepaid mobile provider to earn 5 Stars for Value for Money in our latest Prepaid Mobile Award.
However, as Kogan is a no-frills provider, it does not offer the benefits available from some other telcos, such as free Spotify and free data.
Also Kogan is an online company, so does not offer the type of customer service available from telcos with physical stores.
