ASB is the winner of Outstanding Value Travel Money Card Awards across three of its credit cards:

Visa Flex

  • $0 annual fee
  • $0 foreign transaction fee
  • Low 9.95% p.a. purchase interest rate

  • $0 foreign transaction fee
  • 13.50% p.a. purchase interest rate

ASB's Visa Light offers the same overseas outcomes as ASB's Visa Flex card, however the Light card has more to offer when it comes to domestic card purchases. These benefits include a Smart Rate of 0% p.a. for six months for purchases $1000+, plus balance transfer eligibility. Although in return for these features, the Visa Light card does charge a higher interest rate.

Visa Platinum

  • $125 annual fee
  • $0 foreign transaction fee
  • 19.95% p.a. purchase interest rate

ASB's Visa Platinum card offers complimentary travel insurance that provides unlimited overseas medical and dental, evacuation, repatriation and cancellation cover, plus spouse and dependents coverage.

Which cards do we survey for our awards?

To be eligible for an award, all cards must meet four criteria:

  • Be available to new New Zealand customers
  • Deliver 0% foreign transaction fees on international purchases
  • Have an instant card-locking feature
  • Offer a digital card

There are further eligibility criteria across the two card profiles:

Credit cards must offer either:

  • A $0 card fee, or if a card has a fee it must not exceed $120 p.a. Also, if a card has a fee, then its purchase interest rate must not exceed 15%.
  • Or come with complimentary travel insurance that includes at least $1 million in overseas medical cover, some level of emergency evacuation and repatriation cover, and some level of cancellation cover.

Multi-currency travel money cards must offer:

  • 0% currency conversion fee
  • Ability to lock in a rate
  • No closure, inactivity or monthly fees
  • Weighted average FX margin within 1% of spot, measured across a six-currency basket: USD (35%), EUR (20%), GBP (15%), AUD (15%), JPY (10%), SGD (5%).

How do we determine our award winners?

Our Travel Money Cards Awards recognise the credit cards and multi-currency accounts that deliver genuine value to New Zealanders spending money overseas.

Rather than scoring products against each other and ranking the field, as our other expert-rated awards do, our methodology sets a fixed bar for each product type and tests every eligible product against it.

Any product that clears every requirement for its category wins, whether that is two products or 20. And if nothing clears the bar, no award is given.

FAQs about Canstar's travel money cards awards

Across our financial services awards, Canstar's expert research team reviews the overall value offered by providers. It considers metrics such as price and costs against features and functionality, using a unique research methodology for each award. The products or providers recognised as winners are those that offer the highest overall value propositions.

Canstar recognises financial institutions with annual awards for outstanding value across a wide range of product categories. These awards are given to the providers whose products are the strongest overall performers in our Star Ratings over the award period.

Canstar's Customer Satisfaction Awards are for providers, recognising institutions with the most satisfied customers overall. The awards are based on consumer surveys encompassing thousands of everyday Kiwis across the country.

Canstar compares hundreds of brands and products across multiple finance and household services categories, including banking, insurances and KiwiSaver, as well as energy, broadband and mobile.

Each of Canstar's Star Ratings and Awards uses a unique methodology – created by our expert research team – that analyses products based on price and features.
