Up, up and away with travel rewards

There is no doubt that New Zealanders are enthusiastic travellers, with more than 1.2 million short-term overseas departures in the year to May 2013. According to the Ministry of Business, Innovation and employment, we also spend around $9.8 billion on domestic travel each year. It’s fair to say that travelling – both domestically and internationally – is a national pastime in New Zealand.

As such, a credit card that provides good travel-related rewards is always going to be popular. One such offering is the American Express Platinum Edge Credit Card.Introduced in 2012 and offered in Australia and New Zealand, the AMEX Platinum Edge Credit Card has been designed for Kiwis who love to travel and enjoy their lifestyle – but who need to see value in what they get out of their card. We asked Dean Chadwick, Vice President of Consumer Acquisition & Engagement at American Express for some more information.

“The benefits associated with the card have certainly made it appealing,” says Dean Chadwick.

“Not only do you get a complimentary direct domestic return flight from day one of card membership and once a year thereafter, but you can also earn up to three Membership Rewards Points per dollar spent and redeem the points for hundreds of lifestyle, entertainment and travel rewards or turn them into credit on your American Express Card (all for a $149 annual card fee).

“When it comes to travel, card members love that they can book from as little as two weeks before they fly and even up to ten months in advance.”

When it comes to destination, Dean advises that whether the flight rewards are used for business or pleasure, all parts of New Zealand are popular.

“Of course New Zealand’s main trunk lines like Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch are popular for holidaying and visiting family and friends,” says Dean. “(But) our Cardmembers travel all over New Zealand from its cities to New Zealand’s towns like Nelson, Gisborne and Hokitika. Queenstown is also a popular winter destination for keen skiers.”

The AMEX Platinum Edge Credit card also includes travel insurance when members pay the full fare for a trip on the card account or with American Express Membership Rewards points or when taking a flight under the Return Flight Offer. These benefits include:

  • Overseas Medical Emergency Expenses and Repatriation up to $2,500,000 (Age limit is 74).
  • Travel Cancellation up to $10,000 per trip
  • Baggage up to $10,000 in one year
  • Personal Liability up to $1,000,000

The more that Cardmembers spend on their card, obviously, the more valuable a rewards programme is, but with a complimentary domestic return flight each year, the AMEX Platinum Edge Credit card is offering instant gratification. And for travel-loving New Zealanders, it’s a reward that is sure to hit the spot.
