What does NZ Travel Insurance’s international policy cover?
NZ Travel Insurance’s Essential international travel insurance policy will cover you for the following, up to the specified limits:
- Medical bills
- 24/7 worldwide emergency assistance
- Unexpected journey changes
- Loss of personal baggage or travel documents
- Legal liability
The more comprehensive Premier policy adds the following major inclusions:
- Unlimited overseas medical cover, with limits on emergency dental and hospital expenses
- Resumption of travel and loss of frequent flyer points
- Life benefits, including funeral expenses and accidental death or disablement payments
- Additional personal effects cover
- Rental vehicle excess
- Additional legal liability cover

NZ Travel Insurance FAQs
Yes, NZ Travel Insurance’s Premier policy has unlimited cover for overseas medical expenses, as well as capped cover for emergency dental, incidental hospital expenses and companions; the Essentials policy offers capped medical expenses, with no cover for dental or incidental expenses. Yes, NZ Travel Insurance will cover you up to a certain amount for replacing or reimbursing luggage and personal effects that are lost, stolen or damaged while travelling. The Essentials policy covers you for personal baggage (total and item limits), specified items, emergency baggage, and travel documents; the Premier policy increases all these limits significantly and adds cover for personal cash.

Yes, NZ travel insurance will cover up to a certain amount for lost deposits and cancellation fees for pre-paid travel arrangements due to unforeseen circumstances outside the traveller’s control on a policy. Read the Product Disclosure Statement for more information.
You can purchase a NZ Travel Insurance policy by first comparing your options with Canstar and then generating a quote online. All you need are your departure dates, destination(s) and the ages of those being covered. You can also choose between a single trip and an annual multi-trip policy – the latter is more expensive but usually better value if you’re doing a lot of international travelling.

The easiest way to lodge a claim with NZ Travel Insurance is online via their claims portal. You can also lodge a claim by calling 0800 606 688 (within New Zealand) or emailing firstname.lastname@example.org. For emergency assistance, check out the Contact page for 24/7 with emergency hotline numbers for NZ or international callers. To make a claim, you’ll need a few things as standard:
- The details of the main policy holder, including the policy number
- Your items, events or expenses you wish to claim for
- All supporting documentation, which NZ Travel Insurance will specify via email; this could include receipts, valuations, police reports, copies of travel documents etc.
Following submission, it’s just a matter of waiting to see if your claim will be paid out – NZ will keep you updated with regards to the turnaround time.
